Martin Haake
When one sees map illustrations in a collage style, Martin Haake immediately comes to mind. His works are always brimming with detail; every corner might hide interesting small objects, figures, or information, and each character is incredibly vivid. A sense of humor and whimsical imagination often emanate from his work, guiding viewers into a miniature world full of stories.
Martin Haake, originally from Germany, was born in Oldenburg, in northern Germany. He majored in Communication Design at the Berlin Hochschule der Künste (now Berlin University of the Arts) and, after graduating, has worked as a freelance illustrator for over twenty years. He has collaborated with internationally renowned media and brands, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, AIRBNB, DaimlerChrysler, New York’s Fifth Avenue, and Barnes & Noble. He has received numerous international art awards, including the coveted Yellow Pencil from the British Art Directors’ Club (D&AD) and two prestigious silver awards from the German Art Directors’ Club. His illustrated books, City Atlas and By the Sea, are bestsellers and have been translated into 19 After living in London for several years, Haake now lives and works between Berlin, Germany, and Mallorca, Spain, with his wife and two children. He is very fond of his studio in Berlin, which is located on the second floor of a building in Berlin-Mitte. Although it only contains two tables, a chest of drawers, and a computer, a small library filled with numerous art reference books from which he can draw inspiration.
