From American sports stars to political figures in the White House, Mark Ulriksen captures the absurdity and beauty of the world through his work. His distinctive style brings life to the covers of The New Yorker, offering humorous yet poignant commentary on the often-overlooked moments of everyday life.

Mark Ulriksen is based in San Francisco and is both an artist and an illustrator. His distinctive portraits and whimsical perspective on life have led to collaborations with many high-profile clients. Ulriksen began his career as a graphic designer and magazine art director, transitioning to freelance illustration in his thirties. His work has appeared in many major American magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Time, Rolling Stone, Playboy, and Reader’s Digest. He is best known for his covers for The New Yorker, where he has been a regular contributor since 1993, having created 73 covers to date.

Ulriksen’s favorite subjects to paint include politics, dogs, people, and sports. He illustrated coverage for Golf Digest during the 2008 U.S. Masters and the 2015 British Open. He painted a half-dozen football murals for the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field stadium. His dog-themed prints are also exhibited at Kaiser Permanente hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has been a regular illustrator for SFJAZZ and has won numerous awards, including multiple gold and silver medals from the Society of Illustrators. Ulriksen’s work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress, and his paintings have been exhibited around the world.
